Which sleep issue should I treat first?

insomnia obstructive sleep apnoea

Have you taken the SleepHubs Check-Up? Do your results show that you are at risk of both sleep issues insomnia and obstructive sleep apnoea? Do not worry!

Both of these sleep issues can easily be treated. But where should you start?

Research has shown that patients with both insomnia and obstructive sleep apnoea, should first undertake treatment for insomnia. Before moving onto devices such as CPAP for sleep apnoea. This is because the acceptance and therefore success of CPAP is increased if insomnia symptoms are treated first. So, let’s start with insomnia.

How do I choose the right course for my insomnia?

Does your SleepHubs Check-Up results show you are at high risk of insomnia? We advise that you undertake Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i). This is a 6 week, expert guided online programme. CBT-i is the #1 recommended treatment by the NHS. The SleepHubs programme is completed online. With help from your dedicated sleep therapist and virtual group sessions with other participants.

If your SleepHubs Check-Up results show you are at a moderate risk of insomnia, you may need CBT-i. But you could also benefit from a shorter treatment course which focuses more on sleep hygiene. In some cases, you may begin the shorter course. and after the first week find you need the more detailed CBT-i therapy. If this is the case, you will automatically be switched onto the appropriate course for your sleep issues. And your sleep therapist will contact you to discuss your progression needs.

How do I know if I have Obstructive Sleep Apnoea?

The SleepHubs Check-Up is not a diagnostic tool for apnoea, but it does highlight whether or not you are at risk of this disorder. If your results show you are at a moderate or high risk, we strongly advise that you seek further sleep-maintenance advice. At SleepHubs, we can effectively diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea using our NightOwl® home testing device which you can view and order here.

It is important to note that you can conduct your obstructive sleep apnoea testing at any time, whether you are treating your insomnia or not. It is the treatment of apnoea with sleep-maintenance devices such as CPAP that should be started afterwards. If you take the NightOwl® home test and find that you do indeed have apnoea, you can take these results to your GP for further treatment, or we can help with this directly.
